How an Express Tunnel Car Wash Works, Step by Step

By the Tiger Xpress Car Wash team 5 min read

Quick answer

An express tunnel car wash moves your car along a conveyor while it passes through a series of stations: a presoak loosens grime, foam and soft-cloth brushes scrub the body and wheels, high-pressure water rinses it, protectants like wax go on while the paint is clean, and a spot-free rinse and powerful dryers finish the job. Most washes take just a few minutes, and you stay in the car the whole time.

The short version

  • A conveyor moves the car, so the driver stays inside with the car in neutral.
  • Every wash follows the same order: prep, clean, shine, dry.
  • Higher packages add steps, such as an underbody wash, hot wax or ceramic and graphene protectants.
  • Tiger Xpress uses soft-cloth wraps and brushes; it is not a touchless wash.

What makes a car wash "express"?

An express car wash is built around one long building, the tunnel, with the equipment lined up from the entrance to the exit. You pull up to the pay station, choose a wash, and drive to the entrance, where a conveyor takes over and pulls the car through at a steady pace. You don't get out, and nobody hand-washes the car, which is why a full wash takes minutes instead of an hour.

That differs from two other common types. An in-bay automatic has the car park while a machine moves back and forth over it, which usually takes longer per car. A self-serve bay hands you a wand and a brush. A tunnel can run car after car, so it is the format most monthly unlimited clubs are built on.

At Tiger Xpress Car Wash, at 701 Beatty Dr. in Mount Holly, the tunnel is open every day, 7:30 AM to 9 PM, and free vacuums come with every wash.

Stage 1: Prep loosens the dirt

The first arches spray chemistry, not brushes. A presoak goes on first to soften road film, pollen and dried mud so it lets go of the paint before anything touches it. At Tiger Xpress every wash gets a Double Presoak, and the Cub Wash and up add Bug Prep, a dedicated pass for bug residue on the bumper, mirrors and windshield.

Prep matters more than most drivers think. Dirt that has been loosened rinses away; dirt that hasn't is what makes a wash look "almost clean."

Stage 2: Foam, soft cloth and high pressure clean it

Next comes the part most people picture: thick foam and the wraps and brushes. Tiger Xpress uses soft-cloth wraps and brushes, which clean by light contact while the foam keeps the surface lubricated. Every wash includes the Triple Foam conditioner.

Wheels and tires get their own equipment, because brake dust and tire grime don't come off with the body. From the Cub Wash up, the tunnel adds Double High-Pressure rinsing and a Heavy-Duty Tire Clean (twice, on Tiger Shine and up).

From Tiger Shine up, an Underbody Wash sprays the underside of the car. It's the step that reaches the salt, brine and mud thrown up from the road, which is where rust starts.

Stage 3: Protectants go on clean paint

Once the car is clean, the tunnel applies the products that make water bead and the finish shine. The order is deliberate: a protectant sprayed over dirt just seals the dirt in.

  • Rain Repellent (Cub Wash and up) helps water sheet off the glass.
  • Tire Shine (Cub Wash and up) gives the tires a dark, clean finish.
  • Hot Wax (Tiger Shine and up) adds gloss and a layer of water-beading protection.
  • Ceramic Shield and Graphene Shield (Tiger Shine Plus) add the most durable, slickest protection on the menu.

Stage 4: Rinse and dry without spots

The last arches are about the finish. A Spot Free Rinse is the final rinse, with low-mineral water, so there is less left on the paint to dry into spots. A Drying Agent helps the water break up and slide off, then the Power Dry blowers push it off the car. Tiger Shine Plus finishes under Heated Air Dry.

After the exit, pull under the vacuum canopy. The vacuums are free with every wash, single or club, and Wash Club members get a microfiber towel on each visit for the last drips around the mirrors and door handles.

Which steps come with which wash?

Every package follows the same four stages; the higher ones add steps. Here is how the menu lines up, with everyday single-wash prices, plus tax:

Tiger Xpress wash packages and what each adds
WashSingle washWhat it adds
Xpress Wash$14Double Presoak, Triple Foam, Spot Free Rinse, Drying Agent, Power Dry
Cub Wash$18Bug Prep, Double High-Pressure, Heavy-Duty Tire Clean, Rain Repellent, Tire Shine
Tiger Shine$24Hot Wax, Underbody Wash, X2 Heavy-Duty Tire Clean
Tiger Shine Plus$29Ceramic Shield, Graphene Shield, Heated Air Dry

Each row includes everything in the row above it. The full step lists are on the wash menu. Xpress Wash is a single wash only; Cub Wash, Tiger Shine and Tiger Shine Plus are also available as an Unlimited Wash Club membership.

The Tiger Shine Plus list, start to finish, has 16 steps, which is why it's the one we recommend when the car needs more than a quick rinse.

Is a tunnel wash safe for my paint?

A well-run soft-cloth tunnel is a gentle way to wash a daily driver. Its cloth is kept wet and foamed the whole time, and the presoak has already lifted the grit that does the scratching. Washing at home with one bucket and a dry towel is often harder on paint, because the same grit gets dragged across the panels.

A few things are worth checking before any automatic wash: aftermarket parts that aren't firmly attached, a loose trim piece or mirror, a long fixed antenna, or an oversized roof rack. If you're unsure, ask an attendant before you pull in.
